What Focusmate does well
Focusmate pioneered virtual body doubling. You book a 25, 50, or 75-minute session, a stranger joins on video, you both declare your goal, work silently, and check in at the end. The 1:1 video accountability is structured and research-backed — having a real person watching you commit to a goal works for a lot of ADHD brains. Their community is active, sessions are available around the clock, and the format has years of proof behind it.
Where it falls short for ADHD women
The scheduling requirement is the biggest friction point. You have to book a session in advance, remember you booked it, and still want to work when the session arrives. For ADHD brains that operate on "I need to start this right now", a session you booked two hours ago feels like a completely different task.
Focusmate also doesn't connect to your task list. You declare your goal verbally but it's separate from wherever your tasks actually live. And it has no idea whether you're in your luteal phase and need to pick a smaller goal than usual.
What Lunar does differently
- Drop-in body doubling. Open the app, see who's in a session, join. No calendar, no booking, no pre-commitment.
- Your task list is right there. Pick your task from your energy-filtered list, join the session, work on it — one app.
- Cycle and energy context before you join. You already checked in this morning — Lunar knows it's a low-energy day and your task list already reflects that. You're not guessing what goal to declare.
- No video required. Lower barrier. You can join from anywhere without worrying about your background or camera.
What Focusmate does better
- Structured 1:1 video accountability. If you need a real human face to stay on task, Focusmate's format is stronger.
- Longer sessions. 75-minute blocks for deep work that Lunar's sessions don't match.
- Dedicated community. Regular users who show up consistently.
- Proven research backing. Multiple studies on body doubling effectiveness specifically reference Focusmate-style sessions.

The scheduling problem with ADHD
Focusmate works best when you can predict when you'll want to work. ADHD often breaks that prediction: you book a session for 2pm, but at 2pm you're deep in something else, or the motivation evaporated, or your luteal phase arrived and that project now feels impossible. The session is wasted or you join it resentfully.
Lunar's body doubling is always available. When the impulse to work strikes, you open the app and join. No gap between intention and action.
Can I use Focusmate and Lunar together?
Yes — many users do. Book a Focusmate session for deep focused work that benefits from structured 1:1 accountability. Use Lunar for task selection and lighter body doubling throughout the rest of the day.
Does Lunar have video body doubling?
No. Presence-based without live video — lower barrier to join. You don't need to worry about your camera, background, or appearance. The presence effect still works: knowing others are actively working in the same session changes your brain's approach to starting.
Does Lunar work if my cycle is irregular?
Yes. You log your phase manually at check-in. The energy filter works completely independently if you prefer to skip the cycle input.
